Linux Compatible Too January 25, 2007 Scarletdown (Kitsap County) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I bought one of these several months ago at Grocery Outlet, of all places. I must say, for $10, this was one of the best impulse purchases I ever made.
Contrary to what the specs don't say, this reader works great with Linux, provided you have udev (essentially the Linux PnP manager) installed. The three slots show as SCSI devices, so you mount them like you would any normal hard drive.
I have used this device on two different Linux systems: my desktop, which runs Debian (sid) - 32 Bit 2.6.18-3-k7, and my laptop running Debian (sid) - 64 Bit 2.6.18-1-amd64.
Additionally, I have also tested it on XP Pro. The device just worked without needing any additional drivers.
So far, I have used this reader with two different types of Media: CompactFlash (512MB from Kingston, 20MB from SanDisk, and 16MB from SanDisk), and a 32MB SanDisk SmartMedia Card. All worked flawlessly.
To the reviewer before me who claimed that SmartMedia does not work, perhaps you had a bum card or a defective reader?
The only confusing thing is the 25-in 1 claim. I don't have the original packaging any more, but I do seem to recall that the list of compatible media shown included several variations of CF and others. So I feel that calling this 25-in-1 was stretching things a bit for marketing purposes.
All in all, this was $10 well spent, and this card reader should be an integral part of any proper laptop support kit.
The smallest multi-card reader January 19, 2007 Yongbo Jiang (New York) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This might be the smallest card reader that you can find on the market. It's USB2, solid build quality, read all the cards except SmartMedia (I don't think you can still buy it).
Great portability...! July 21, 2007 MilkyW@y (Jupiter, FL USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Targus® TGR-CRD25 is quickly recognized by my Gateway Tablet as an external drive, reading my SD memory cards well. I'm not sure now but, I think I got mine from Radio Shack® a while back. Yesterday I visited Targus' site searching for some specs and updates (if any) about the gadget and could not find it listed as one of their current or discontinued products. So, makes me wonder if it is really a Targus® product. Regardless, I really appreciate its portability. It works fine for me with my Memory Sticks, SD, and CF memory cards. I also use the 32-in-1 "DIGIPOWER" combo card reader/writer - 3 Port USB Hub with mood light (#DP-FHC11) with my memory cards but, the TGR-CRD25 is half the size and more convenient at some types of travels. This gadget could have benefited from more illustrative information for the user. I have so many gadgets that I can't tell now which of the USB cables I have came with it; a picture would have help. I now mark all my individual parts for reference.
Tip: Remember to align metal contacts when inserting your SD memory card...!
I use a smaller USB cable for convenience but, it is not the one supplied with my Targus TGR-CRD25.
More than I expected!!! March 30, 2009 John Walters (Akron, Ohio) After purchasing a NEW notebook computer with the "new" Vista, I needed a multi card reader. I went to an office supply store and purchased a Sony multi card reader with a CD installation disk only to find out after several attempts to install it, and two calls to Sony Tech support, that this reader, one of the few removable readers with compact flash regognition, can be installed on my computer. I paid thirty dollars for it only to find out that it was not returnable. I went to Wal-mart, checked their electronics department and found this Targus for a little more than six dollars! I was even told I could return it if it wasn't the right one..........GREAT!!!!
NO installation disks required, and it uses a USB 2.0 port with about a five second delay while it reads and recognizes the drive(s). Fast access to the different types of chips I use on it...PLUS...it's small and compact. Just right for travel with a notebook. I recommend this one...a keeper!
Cheap and works great with many card types. July 14, 2009 Jeremy J. Baker (Omaha, Ne. USA) Buying this is a no brainer if you have multiple card formats that you want to input into your computer or write to.
